Sheriff's Functions

                                                   


The Sheriff’s Office is not a department of Luzerne County
but an autonomous Office of the Sheriff who is elected
every 4 years as set forth in the Pennsylvania Constitution
.

Duties of the Sheriff

  • To enforce all orders of the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas
  • To serve bench warrants, civil writs and protection from abuse orders
  • To conduct levies, sales of personal property and real estate
  • To provide security and protection for court related functions and all county facilities
  • To transport prisoners to and from county, state, and federal institutions for court appearances
  • To arrest violators of the law and fugitives
  • To assist other law-enforcement agencies in the county
  • To assist in special law-enforcement efforts such as Central Booking, DUI roving and saturations patrols, and community events
  • To issue Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms and Licenses to Sell Firearms
