Sheriff's Functions

The Sheriff’s Office is not a department of Luzerne County
but an autonomous Office of the Sheriff who is elected
every 4 years as set forth in the Pennsylvania Constitution.
Duties of the Sheriff
- To enforce all orders of the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas
- To serve bench warrants, civil writs and protection from abuse orders
- To conduct levies, sales of personal property and real estate
- To provide security and protection for court related functions and all county facilities
- To transport prisoners to and from county, state, and federal institutions for court appearances
- To arrest violators of the law and fugitives
- To assist other law-enforcement agencies in the county
- To assist in special law-enforcement efforts such as Central Booking, DUI roving and saturations patrols, and community events
- To issue Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms and Licenses to Sell Firearms
